Features, Life Cycles and the Environment Year 3-4
Through the lens of the seasonal calendar of the Kulin Nation, students will develop their understanding of the dependency between living things and their environment. They will take away skills to incorporate sustainable practices in their own lives.
Program description
This program supports students’ understanding of how the seven seasons of the Kulin Nation affect the growth and survival of living things. Students will explore how these changes impact species and their environment while developing science skills to positively influence their community.
Students will learn:
- The impact of seasonal change on an environment
- How living things are connected to each other
- Skills that will enable students to have a positive influence within their local community

Use the activities in the Teaching Guide (below) to spark students’ curiosity before their zoo visit.
Connect and Understand
Students will discover the impacts of seasonal changes on the environment and the living things that reside in it.
They will be provided with the opportunity to develop science skills that will allow them to have a positive impact on their local community and will take away skills to incorporate sustainable practices in their own lives.
Your zoo visit will include: A welcome to the day (for arrivals between 9:40 – 10:00am), Zoo Teacher workshop (40 minutes) and keeper talks. Check out your Teaching Guide for other ideas of what to do at the zoo.

Living things can be grouped on the basis of observable features and can be distinguished from non-living things (VCSSU057)
- Students identify the variations in the features of animals
Different living things have different life cycles and depend on each other and the environment to survive (VCSSU058)
- Students examine the life cycles of different animals and how the seven seasons of the Kulin Nation affect local environments
Identify and explain the interconnections within places and between places (VCGGC073)
- Students explore how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples interacted and cared for different places, including different types of vegetation
The many Countries/Places of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Australia, and the custodial responsibility they have for Country/Place, and how this influences views about sustainability (VCGGK080)
- Students will investigate the characterstics of different Aboriginal Countries, examining how custodial responsiblity influences views about sustainability

This program is an outdoor all-weather program; the students will need appropriate clothing for weather conditions. This could include a raincoat, hat and sun protection.
